Chobani-licious: Chobani Product Review & Giveaway!

First things first. It's been about a year and a half since I discovered greek yogurt. Thank goodness that happened, right? I have since then learned that there are some wannabe greek yogurts, and there are some REAL greek yogurts. Chobani is DEFINITELY one of the legit kinds, and so I was STOKED to do a product review for them. I love getting mail...especially when it is in food form.
The fantastic people at Chobani sent me a case of the flavors of my choice.  I usually just go with the plain yogurt, so wanted to try some flavors that I hadn't yet tried before. I went with the low fat strawberry banana, the Chobani Champions chocolate chunk and the chobani champions orange vanilla.
Oh my goodness. So tasty! The thing that I loved about these flavors is they are not only tasty, but they are packed full of protein. They make for an awesome snack, part of a perfect meal, or even a sweet dessert. The Champions yogurts were made with little ones in mind, and I am certain that any kid would think they were delicious!
Another reason to LOVE Chobani products is the fact that they use only natural ingredients in making them, so you don't have to worry about any strange additives being added in to your food. They are DELISH!

The good news? The fabulous people at Chobani have offered to give one of YOU an assorted case of your choice!
To enter to win your own case of Chobani... simply leave me a comment telling me which of their flavors that you want to try! For additional entries, you can tweet about the giveaway, blog about it,  or FB it and leave additional comments telling me you've done so! The last day to enter this contest will be Monday, November 5th, 2012 at midnight. The winner will be announced on November 6th! Good luck to ya!

A Healthy New Snack: Boom Chicka Pop!

Everyone is always asking me for healthy snack ideas. So, when I find one I always feel obligated to share. I raved about a product that I love called Skinny Pop a while back. I am definitely still a huge fan, but unfortunately it can be hard to find sometimes. Our local Sprouts (which was previously Sunflower Market) now carries it, which is awesome. However, in the meantime I always had my eye out for a similar product. Well, guess what? I found one. AND, the best part...it is available at Target, which is much more accessible for those who don't have any sort of specialty health food stores around them. Presenting...Boom Chicka Pop.
It is all natural, and the ingredients consist of popcorn, sunflower oil, and sea salt. Simple. Fabulous.
And the name is fun to say, right? We gave my little nephew the bag to grab some handfuls and we had to take it from him before he ate the whole thing. He LOVED it. It is so light and tasty, and has just enough flavor to keep you wanting more. I like it every bit as much as the Skinny Pop! It is a GREAT snack options! Try it out!

Product Review: Artisana Nut Butters

There are always so many different brands of nut butters it can be hard to sift through them all. I am very picky about the consistency and taste of the nut butters that I eat. Since I began eating paleo, it was hard to omit peanut butter. (Mostly because I considered it a food group.) However, I've learned to like other types of nut butters now too. The people at Artisana sent me some of their awesome products to review.
I tried the organic almond butter and the cacao coconut butter. Oh my goodness...so SO tasty. The almond butter was just the right consistency, and had an awesome flavor. Not to mention the stellar nutrition facts...
Ingredients: 100% organic raw almonds. That's it.
The coconut cacao butter was absolutely divine as well. It tasted like chocolate pina colada on my apples, and it is GOOD. BTW, eating apples sliced this way more fun than any normal way.
They also sent me a bunch of other sample packets of their awesome products. So great!
If you are looking for some deliciously whole and nutty goodness, Artisana has some AWESOME products to offer. I would definitely recommend them!

The lovely people over at Xango sent me some of their products to review, and I was more than happy to do so! As you know, I love having the opportunity to try any new products. Not only is Xango something I haven't tried before, but it is also a local-based company. I love that!

Xango prides themselves in their all natural products, which I am all about. As soon as I heard that I was definitely on board to try some new things out. The first product I tried was the all natural Xango juice. If you'd like to read more about the origin of the juice click HERE.
This juice is packed full of nutrients and a great addition to a healthy diet. This description comes from the Xango website, "Harnessing mangosteen’s remarkable whole-fruit properties, XANGO Juice provides biologically active compounds and phytonutrients—including xanthones, catechins, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins—to support respiratory health, immune health, intestinal health and joint health.* Substantiated by human clinical studies, XANGO Juice also supports cardiovascular health and healthy metabolism." This product tastes fresh, and since testing it I have discovered that there are quite a few people who have included Xango juice in their health regimen, and feel as if they have greatly benefited from doing so.

There is no question that my favorite product that the people from Xango sent me was the Favao protein powder. I am a huge fan!
Not only is this protein the PERFECT addition to my favorite protein shakes, but there are a whole collection of recipes that are awesome on the Favao site. The nutrition facts for this powder are great too!
Not only are there great recipes on the Favao site, but there is also a whole slew of videos with great exercise tips. LOTS of good stuff, you should check it out!
I was also able to check out the 3sixty5 vitamin packs. These are AWESOME! I am a big believer in taking a multi-vitamin, and these vitamin packs make life easy because you can simply grab a pack and go. All in all I was very impressed with the Xango products! I think that there is definitely good to all of the products they offer, and with so many different products there is something for everyone!

Product Review: Element Bars

There is just something awesome about people who get good, whole foods. We have become a society that likes things quick and easy. I get that. However, when did quick and easy come to mean processed, full of sugar, and completely unhealthy as well? The sad thing is that there are plenty of options out there that can be quick, easy, AND healthy. Crazy, right? Well, it's true. The people at Element Bars have taken the concept of healthy eating on the go, and made it totally possible. Not only have they made it possible, but they have made it customizable. You better believe that I love everything about that.

Well, the peeps over at Element Bars sent me a whole slew of their favorite combination to try.

The verdict: Awesome.
What I like about these bars versus a LOT of other bars out there.
- The ingredients used are all natural and organic
- You can create your OWN bar with whatever you want in it. This is great for those who have food sensitivities and allergies.
- You can choose from their tried and true, favorites that are already made for you. This is a bonus for the indecisive.
- There are endurance bars for athletes. Hello awesome. I had one before I did a run, and it was a great form of nutrients. It didn't upset my stomach, and I ate it on the go, which was exactly what I needed.
-You can take a quiz, and they will tell you which bars will fit your tastes best. How great is that?
- You can also watch the nutrition facts calculate for your bar as you add and take away different ingredients. Awesome.
I loved reviewing these bars, and I love that so many awesome companies are coming up with WHOLE foods that are healthy and that don't taste like dirt. ;)

Try em out. They're tasty!

Product Review: New York Naturals Kale Chips

I have wanted to try making Kale Chips forEVER. I have had so many people tell me that they are a great snack alternative, and they are jam packed full of a bazillion nutrients. Well, do you know what is better than having to make Kale Chips yourself? Having an awesome company like New York Naturals send you some.
These kale chips are seriously tasty. They are definitely VERY flavorful. The flavors they sent me were Bombay Ranch, Spicy Miso, Sea Salt, and Vegan Cheese.
My favorite flavors were the Bombay Ranch and the Sea Salt, but they were all delicious.
Each of these delightful little chips is dried and seasoned with all natural ingredients. The nutritional facts are fabulous as well. New York Naturals uses nutritional yeast, which gives an awesome flavor and adds some protein too!
These awesome kale chips are the perfect snack if you are looking to cut back on your carbohydrates, and you are still needing some healthy snacks. You'll love them!

Have you ever tried New York Naturals kale chips? Have you ever made your own kale chips? I have a feeling my version would be sub par after trying out these tasty delights!

Product Review: Skinny Pop

I have a LOT of people ask me about good snacks. One think I always suggest to my clients is air popped popcorn. It is light, filling, SO low calorie, and it takes some time/work to eat. The two things I don't like about air popped popcorn are
1) It makes your whole house smell like popcorn
2) the kernels (or grannies as my family calls them) I have no idea why.

The people from Skinny Pop sent me a giant box of their popcorn to try. I kid you not, this stuff is UNREAL. Now, I know some of you are trying to follow the Paleo way of eating that I have been following. This snack is not Paleo approved. However, I know that the majority of you aren't trying to eat that way, and I am looking out for you too!! I promise this stuff is going to change your life. It is SO SO SO SO SO good. Are you sensing my enthusiasm?
Skinny Pop takes air popped popcorn to the next level. It is simply popcorn, a little bit of sunflower oil, and sea salt. I'm telling you, it is BOMB. Oh...and it's already made for you with NO unpopped kernels which also means your house/office will not smell like popcorn for the next week.
I gave some to my mom, dad, sister, and roommate to try and they all loved it. Devoured may be a better word. My sister and I both said that we felt like we could take this to a movie and feel totally satisfied with our own popcorn, and not worry about missing out on the movie theater popcorn at all. You can have one cup for only 39 calories which is amazing. Just for a frame of reference...a large movie theater popcorn has around 1,200 calories and 60 grams of SATURATED fat. Gross.
The other great thing about this fabulous snack is you can use THIS finder tool on their website to find the store closest to you that carries Skinny Pop.When I was home in Arizona last week my mom and I used it, found her some, and stocked her up. If you like popcorn, you will love this stuff, and you will not feel one ounce bad about munching on it. TASTY!!

Do you like popcorn? Have you tried Skinny Pop? Are you a movie theater popcorn eater?

Product Review: Just Tomatoes

I have a lot of nieces and nephews. I absolutely love each and everyone of them. One thing I have noticed about them, and little kids in general, is that they are little snackers. Whatever I happen to be eating, they usually want a bite of. I totally had them in mind as I was reviewing the products that Just Tomatoes, Etc. sent me.
Sadly, so many of the foods that kids are fed for snacks are sugar based, made with processed white flour, and full of all sorts of processed products we can't pronounce. It is almost as if we are forcing kids to have a sugar addiction right from the start. Now, I know that a lot of parents make a very valiant effort to feed their kids good, high quality foods and snacks. Having healthy snacks that are easy to grab can help parents in a big way.

Just Tomatoes, Etc. describes the process that they use to create their product in this way...
"Our Process
Just Tomatoes, Etc.! dehydrated fruits and vegetables are vine-ripened (or tree-ripened), hand-picked at peak condition, washed, cut and then placed in specially designed dehydrators and dried at low temperatures to preserve color, flavor and nutrients. Both dehydrated and freeze-dried products are an excellent source of nutrition.

This line of unique dried fruits and vegetables have been carefully selected and combined for your ultimate enjoyment... as great snacks and terrific ingredients for culinary treats.
"
The snacks they provide come in pouches that can be resealed and taken anywhere. They are fresh, and full of flavor. I had a friend of mine test out these fruit munchies with me, and she LOVED THEM. They have a ton of flavor, and I think they would be awesome mixed into some oatmeal, cereal, muffin mix, or yogurt.
There is also a line of organic and pure powder products that can make adding nutrition and flavor to shakes, cookies, muffins, etc. I think the idea is absolutely brilliant. We may not always be able to have fresh produce on hand, but by using products like this you can have good healthy options at your fingertips anytime.

In regards to the topic of children and poor nutrition, a big problem comes in the fact that kids are not receiving the education and knowledge they need at a young age. Just Tomatoes, Etc. Is really trying to do something about that. If you click HERE you will see a collection of free downloadable teacher/parent resources to help teach your kids about eating healthy in fun and interesting ways. You can also go HERE to print of a coloring sheet to have your children color and enter into their coloring contest.
I love what this company is doing! I think that these products offer a tasty alternative for snacks. I know that healthy adults come from healthy children. Starting now to introduce good health habits will be so beneficial to your kids! Thanks Just Tomatoes, Etc. for the opportunity to review your product!
Do your kids eat healthy? Do you have to force feed healthy foods down their throats, or will they willingly eat healthier choices? Do you find that they are already addicted to processed and sugary foods and snacks? How do you introduce the idea of eating healthy to them?

Product Review: Larabars

There is something to be said about convenience. As I have been eating Paleo, one of the things that I have had the hardest time with is the time that it takes a lot of preparation time as far as food is concerned. Sometimes life gets real busy, and eating has to be done quickly. The great people from LaraBar sent me a bunch of their bars to try.
They sent me some delicious kinds to try like Banana Bread, Coconut Cream Pie, Chocolate Cookie Dough, Chocolate Brownie, Gingersnap, and Blueberry. What doesn't sound good about those? The best part about them? They all have like three or four ingredients...

The Banana Bread Bar consists of almonds, dates, and unsweetened bananas. That's it.
They are simple and clean and REALLY good. I am a big fan of things that I can throw in my bag and have with me if I get in a situation where I don't have time to make something.
I say it all the time, but preparation is a HUGE part of being successful. If you are prepared with your food you will most definitely have more success. I can promise you that.
The verdict? I really, really liked these bars. I am very picky about which bars I eat, and I would totally recommend these to anyone. They are just about as close to whole foods as you can get in packaged form. I think they are super tasty, and they are the perfect food to have on hand if you are ever in a time crunch!

Have you ever had Larabars? If so, what is your favorite flavor? I loved the Banana Bread and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!

Go Raw? Don't mind if I do.

I thoroughly enjoy doing product reviews. Who wouldn't love trying food that arrives on your doorstep like it's Christmas? However, I'm gonna be real honest here. This may have been one of the greatest reviews I've done yet.

Do you you know what this is?
Lots of empty wrappers. That is what it is. They are empty because I LOVED EVERY BITE!

Kristina from Go Raw sent me a bunch of their organic, whole, totally paleo approved snacks to review. Ohhh man, they were tasty. Now, I know that I have taste buds that like things like vegetables and fruits, but I have to tell you, I shared them with friends and my family and they loved them too! My favorite snack was the Pizza Flax Snax. Look at these ingredients...
Awesome.
These delicious cracker-like snacks are packed with fully organic, healthy ingredients. Some of the  Go Raw Attributes are:

100% ORGANIC Certification
Vegan
Sugar Free
Gluten Free
Soy Free
Nut Free (Nuts don’t sprout!)
Kosher
They have delicious snack rounds, cookie rounds, large bars, and snack size bars. I would say my favorites were the spirulina based treats, the pizza flax snax, and the original super cookies. LOVED them.
Go raw also offers some fantastic organic sprouted pumpkin seeds. They have a little bit of flavor to them and make the perfect snack all by their lonesome, or give some added nutrition a top a salad.
Oh and if you're wondering why these products are considered, "raw," this info may clear some things up...Kristina gave me some more info on the product procedure.
"Sortex:
We start with the highest quality confectionary grade 100% organic seeds (local/fair trade when available) but even then there is still a chance that impure seeds, rocks, glass and other foreign particles have slipped into the mix.  Our State of the art Sorting machine determines the purity of our seeds with exceptional accuracy within a split second. On the basis of color, shape or other optical properties, defective items and foreign material are identified and separated from the product stream. Leaving only the best seeds to make their way to the next step.

X-Ray Machine:
We have implemented an X-Ray machine to scan for any foreign particles that may have tried to sneak in. We want our final product to be of the upmost highest quality possible and are taking every precaution to achieve this. This X-Ray machine has been approved by our Organic Certifiers and is completely safe.

Washing of the Seeds:
Washing of the seeds is taken very seriously here. Seeds are from the ground thus very dirty. We want to ensure that they are completely clean, so we have a special seed washing machine that thoroughly washes them 3 times in purified water.

Sprouting: While all raw foods contain enzymes, sprouts are the most enzyme dense food on the planet. The most rapid part of growth of a plant
is during its initial stages as a sprout, dehydrating the seeds at this stage of their cycle preserves this precious state and passes along these vital enzymes.

Mixing:
Once our seeds have been sorted, washed, and sprouted, we mix in the other Organic ingredients.

Hand Spread Products:
Products are shown with the utmost respect and carefully spread out onto trays by hand.

Custom Dehydration System:
We were unable to find a dehydration system that lived up to our standards so we custom designed our own. Our Dehydration system is fully regulated and controlled to maintain the proper humidity, temperature and water activity levels to achieve a superior product. Our Dehydration system maintains an average temperature of 97 degrees, ensuring that our sprouted seeds are still alive and well. If you plant them they will grow!"

And of course, I had to save the best for last...The Go Raw Chocolate squares...These chewy delights are super tasty, and they also offer chocolate mint and chocolate orange. Helloooo. Chocolate mint? Yes, please.
Thanks for the awesome opportunity to review some great, healthy products. They were delicious, portable, kid friendly, and I would gladly purchase any of them. I am craving those pizza flax snax, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get me some more ASAP! If you want more info on the awesome Go Raw products, click HERE!

A Healthy Grocery List - Muncher Cruncher Approved

Today as I whipped up my quick and delicious lunch I got to thinking. I have a lot of favorite healthy food items that I swear by. My lunch consisted of a few of these items which is where this train of thought began.

Lunch was simple:
Whole wheat bagel thin with sliced turkey and honey dijon mustard and 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese with tomatoes, salt, and pepper.
Usually any sort of turkey sandwich I make has spinach and a lot more veggies on it. However, when I went to the store this week they were out of lettuce. Yep. Straight up, 100% out. No romaine, no spinach, no nothing. So annoying...
I am absolutely in LOVE with these little bagel thins. I tried them about a month ago, and I can't even tell you the last time I'd had a bagel before that. Usually bagels come about the size of my head and with about 400 calories right along with it. I'd rather put my calories elsewhere. But, due to the fact that I do think bagels are very tasty, I was delighted to find these little 110 calories delights. They are perfect for sandwiches, are great dipped in soup, and would be awesome made into a little oven pizza.

I have clients ask me for different food suggestions all the time. They want to know my favorite brands of this, that, and the other. I am always so happy to share my favorites because finding great food that is healthy and delicious makes me excited. Why wouldn't I want to share it. So...without further a do, my Muncher Cruncher approved shopping list.

Produce:
*Let's be honest. Good fresh produce is AWESOME. This list consists of my favorite specific ways to eat it. It is definitely not all I buy. I can hardly name a fruit or veggie I don't like, BUT keep in mind, these are just my favorites.
- baby carrots
- cherub tomatoes
- baby spinach/spinach (LOVE the huge bag at Costco. Such a great price)
- fresh blackberries/strawberries/blueberries/raspberries to nibble on (frozen for protein shakes)
- apples (I prefer crisp apples so I love fuji, gala, braeburn and honey crisp)
- bananas
- avocados
- Costco mini sweet bell peppers
- Costco broccoli florets (amazing way to take ALL the work out of eating broccoli)
- Salad Bars (Sometimes it is just more worth it to me to pick up an awesome salad with tons of fresh produce over my buying each item and making my own salad.)

Dairy:
- skim milk
- Almond milk
- Vanilla soy milk
- 0% fat greek yogurt (I like Fage and Chiobani the best. Costco sells a container of Fage at a great price.)
- Eggs (I end up ditching most of the yolks, but egg whites are an AWESOME source of protein.)
- part skim mozzarella string cheese
- low fat cottage cheese

Packaged (dry):
- La Tortilla Factory whole wheat low carb tortillas (one of my favorite products ever made. ever.)
- Whole wheat bagel thins (There are several brands of these. I always get the ones with the lowest calories and highest amount of protein and fiber.)
- Special K Protein Plus Cereal (This stuff is AWESOME. I mix it with other cereals to boost the protein.)
- Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal (I try not to over do it on the cereal because most are higher in sugar, but if I do eat it this mixed with the Special K protein plus is my go to.)
- Swiss Miss Diet hot chocolate (They have a sugar free variety as well, but i prefer the diet. It only has 25 calories per serving)
- Ranch Salad dressing packets
- Taco seasoning packets
- Chocolate Muscle Milk Light
- Biochem Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
- Quaker Slow Cook Old Fashioned Oats
- Raw Almonds (I like the Costco bags)
- Brown Rice
- Skippy Natural Peanut Butter

Packaged (refrigerated):
- Costco Deli Turkey
- Costco Mango Salsa
- Hummus
- Kroger brand low fat avocado ranch

Canned:

- Light Marinara/Pasta sauces
- Turkey Chili

Frozen:
- Costco individual Edama mae packets
- Morningstar Black bean veggie burgers
- Chicken Breasts
- Popsicle Brand sugar free fudgesicles
- Vegetable blends (the California mix is my fave)

This is a pretty comprehensive list of the items I have on hand for my meals all the time. Hopefully it will give you some ideas of some new items to try! Do you see any of your favorites on this list? What are your most common go-to meal items?

My Kitchen Favorites

Eating healthy can be made so much easier when you have the right tools to do so. I thought I'd share some of my favorite kitchen appliances that help me to eat healthier.

1. My Mini Cuisinart Food Processor.
I LOVE this little guy. It is perfect for making fresh salsa, or for dicing up onions for all of your healthy recipes. I also love it for making frozen banana soft serve and to puree zucchini for my fave zucchini cookies. I made a batch last night for church today, and they were scarfed right up!
Sometimes current Macys coupons apply to small appliances, so watch for that and get a Cuisinart.

2. Hamilton Beach Crock Pot
If you don't own a crock pot, you need to get one. They are a GREAT way to make eating healthy possible, no matter what your time schedule.
My favorite crock pot recipes?
Salsa Chicken
Elegant Chicken
BBQ Chicken
White Bean Chicken Chili
and Steel Cut Oats

3. Good Grips Salad Spinner
I think I've already mentioned how much I love my salad spinner. It is seriously the greatest invention ever. Having soggy lettuce in a salad is the worst thing ever, let's be honest. Nobody likes that. Whipping up some quick salads make for a great method of getting a lot of fruits and veggies in at one time. My favorite salads? I love my go to Fiesta Chicken Salad, or a delicious Greek Salad.

4. Digital Food Scale.
If you are really trying to be exact with you food choices and portions when trying to lose weight, a food scale is a great purchase. You may be surprised how off you are on "eye balling" the foods you eat. It seems like people are usually drastically off on the oz amount of their cuts of meat and their pieces of fruit.

 5. Stainless Steel Cookie Scoop.
My mom has always used one of these, and I remember when I first moved out of the house I made cookies without one and felt quite unsure of how in the heck you get perfect cookies without one. Don't worry, my mom quickly remedied that problem, and got a scoop for me. I love this for making any sort of cookies and it works great for scooping batter into individual muffin tins as well.
Some good healthy recipes to try? Whole wheat pumpkin chocolate chip cookies or these Healthy Cinnamon Sweet Potato Muffins...both great recipes for fall!

6. Good Grips Apple Cutter.
If you have kids, these are the BEST. Heck, if you don't have kids these are the best. These make for the quickest snack. Cut up an apple and dip it in some peanut butter and you are good to go! YUM!

7. Silicone Oven Mitts
I have raved about these Sur La Table silicone oven mitts before. They are so great, and they are dishwasher safe. Awesome. You can be ready to handle any hot and healthy dish with these bad boys!

I could go on with kitchen products I love, but these are just a few that I absolutely couldn't live without! What are some of your favorite kitchen appliances? If you tell me it's your Kitchen Aid or your Vitamix I'm gonna be reaaal jealous.
